Counselor's Corner

Class placement is a carefully thought-out process with each individual child's needs carefully considered by many stakeholders. Beginning today, you may fill out the 2018-2019 Class Placement Parent Input Form to provide input about your child's personality and learning style for next year. The form can also be found on the Counselor Webpage.  Our intent is for each student to be set up for success academically, emotionally, and socially. Please refrain from making specific friend and/or teacher requests, as they will NOT be honored. This form is completely optional and certainly not necessary. However, it is an opportunity for parents to provide input on the best learning environment for their child if they feel inclined. All parent input is due Friday, May 11, 2018.

Sincerely,

Addie Edwards

May Madness: Friday, May 4th

(Rain date is Friday, May 18th)

Kinder, 1st and 2nd – 8:45 -11:00

Bridge Point's 21st annual May Madness is just around the corner!!  This year's May Madness promises to be lots of fun with lots of awesome stations! More details are below and we still need LOTS of volunteers to make it all happen, so please read on!

Students should wear cool and comfortable shorts and a t-shirt with athletic shoes or running sandals. Please do not send your child with flip-flop type sandals, Crocs or shoes that won't be safe to run in.

SUNSCREEN IS A MUST FOR THIS DAY!!  Please apply sunscreen the morning before school and send some with your child to reapply before activities begin. There will be extra sunscreen at various stations.

Thank you in advance to those parents who have volunteered to help out on this MAD day! Please be prepared to stay the entire shift (try to avoid being late or leaving early). If you are volunteering, dress to play! (athletic shoes, comfortable shirt and shorts, etc. are a must to be active!). If you are volunteering, especially in the afternoon, please use Smart tag for any transportation changes. If you have not yet signed up for this unbelievable day - it is not too late!  Go to the Booster Club website to sign up! We need lots of moms and dads!!

**Please make childcare arrangements for younger children—your hands will be full and busy!

We hope this information will help you and your child to prepare for a day of MADNESS!  If necessary, our rain out date will be Friday, May 18th.   We know this will be a day of fun for all and hope that you'll be able to join us!

The Shelf Life: Library Update

Second graders recently had the opportunity to learn about William Kamkwamba, who shares his inspiring story in the autobiography The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. At the age of 14, William built his own windmill using only a photo in a library book and scraps from a junkyard. He used the power from this windmill to provide electricity to his family home in Malawi and later went on to build a second windmill to irrigate their crops. Students also heard William speak about his experience in a TED Talk.

As a follow up to this read aloud, second graders were challenged with designing a "puff mobile." They received specific materials (three straws, four lifesavers, a piece of paper, two paperclips, and masking tape) and had to create a vehicle that would move using only their breath. They also learned that students at Cedar Creek completed this activity, and one of their designs traveled nine feet with a single puff!

Students had three library sessions to work on this project and we just finished this week. During our final lesson, everyone participated in a gallery walk to check out their classmates' designs. Then we watched a video sent over by Cedar Creek librarian, Shannon Foley, to see some of the puff mobiles they created. Take a look at some of our inventions on the library blog!

Sincerely,

Kate Ricter

DISTRICT NEWS

Spaces remain or are now open for kindergarten at Cedar Creek, Bridge Point and Barton Creek Elementary schools in 2018-19. Only parents who attend this meeting will receive the application to enroll.

One way to support your child in growing into a successful adult is to teach responsible decision making. In order for a child to learn the skill of making responsible decisions, the child must have the opportunity to make a decision and experience the consequences of his/her own decision. Our children may make quick decisions that are “rash, egocentric and short-sighted” without fully exploring the impact of their decision. They may even make a poor choice that has painful consequences. As parents it is difficult to watch our children struggle with consequences; however, it is our role as caring parents to do so.

Parents can start to teach their children the skill of decision-making at a young age, although decision-making is a “complex process that takes years to master”. Read the article Raising Good Decision Makers by Dr. Jim Taylor to learn more about how to teach your child the skill of decision-making.

The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed by Jessica Lahey and How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims are two books that address the importance of allowing children to experience the consequences of their actions.
