April 20, 2018 Bridge Point Elementary BPE NEWS Counselor's Corner
Class placement is a carefully thought-out process with each individual child's needs carefully considered by many stakeholders. Beginning today, you may fill out the 2018-2019 Class Placement Parent Input Form to provide input about your child's personality and learning style for next year. The form can also be found on the Counselor Webpage. Our intent is for each student to be set up for success academically, emotionally, and socially. Please refrain from making specific friend and/or teacher requests, as they will NOT be honored. This form is completely optional and certainly not necessary. However, it is an opportunity for parents to provide input on the best learning environment for their child if they feel inclined. All parent input is due Friday, May 11, 2018. Sincerely, Addie Edwards May Madness: Friday, May 4th (Rain date is Friday, May 18th) Kinder, 1st and 2nd – 8:45 -11:00 3rd, 4th and 5th – 12:20 – 2:45

FULL OF "MADNESS", Bridge Point Physical Education Teachers "MAD MOTHERS"/ COORDINATORS: The Shelf Life: Library Update Second graders recently had the opportunity to learn about William Kamkwamba, who shares his inspiring story in the autobiography The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. At the age of 14, William built his own windmill using only a photo in a library book and scraps from a junkyard. He used the power from this windmill to provide electricity to his family home in Malawi and later went on to build a second windmill to irrigate their crops. Students also heard William speak about his experience in a TED Talk.
Kate Ricter BPE CALENDAR Monday - April 23, 2018 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM DISTRICT NEWS Spaces remain or are now open for kindergarten at Cedar Creek, Bridge Point and Barton Creek Elementary schools in 2018-19. Only parents who attend this meeting will receive the application to enroll. One way to support your child in growing into a successful adult is to teach responsible decision making. In order for a child to learn the skill of making responsible decisions, the child must have the opportunity to make a decision and experience the consequences of his/her own decision. Our children may make quick decisions that are “rash, egocentric and short-sighted” without fully exploring the impact of their decision. They may even make a poor choice that has painful consequences. As parents it is difficult to watch our children struggle with consequences; however, it is our role as caring parents to do so. Parents can start to teach their children the skill of decision-making at a young age, although decision-making is a “complex process that takes years to master”. Read the article Raising Good Decision Makers by Dr. Jim Taylor to learn more about how to teach your child the skill of decision-making. The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed by Jessica Lahey and How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims are two books that address the importance of allowing children to experience the consequences of their actions.
